Nonprofit Strategic Plans - Five Examples Plus Free Template

What does a nonprofit strategic planning process include?

The Ross Collective supports the creation of nonprofit strategic plans. Our Inclusive Strategic Planning process for clients such as AEOE, Bike East Bay, Construction Trades Workforce Initiative, East Oakland Collective, interACT, National VOAD, Mission Bit, New Museum Los Gatos, Pittsburg Arts & Community Foundation , SOS Meals on Wheels , Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy and Youth Alive has included five steps:

1) Kickoff

3-4 weeks. Determine focus areas for planning and who will participate in planning.

2) Discovery

1-2 months. Gather and analyze data from interviews, focus groups and surveys.

3) Prioritization

Days-long or virtual retreat. Bring staff and board together to build a vision for the organization and review or revise the organizational mission.

4) Planning

One to two months. Finalize organizational strategies and goals.

5) Implementation

Implementation turns strategy into action. This step clarifies responsibilities, timelines, systems, and communication so the plan becomes a living guide rather than a static document. This step include building a action plan for Year One.

Below is a strategic plan from past client East Oakland Collective.

A couple of notes:

  • The document below is a part of what was generated during strategic planning. There is also a one-year action and implementation plan that guides the organization’s work.

  • As a relatively new organization, East Oakland Collective did not have many of the pieces below. They were generated or rewritten through the planning process.

  • Once the plan was completed, East Oakland Collective shared this strategic plan with their community and it generated a lot of excitement.
